Everything was calm on the surface of the water. The sun was bright and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Now and then, the water level would rise and fall again without resistance, as a large wave propagated towards the shore, some distance away. Occasionally, squawking seagulls would break the silence, but this interruption was brief and undamaging to the atmosphere of serenity out on the open ocean today.
Then, something stirred. A long, narrow disturbance in the water appeared on the horizon, distorting the smooth curve of the wavefront as it drew nearer. When it could no longer support its shape, a grey dorsal fin broke the surface with an audible ripple, shearing through the water at high speed. An observer looking down from above would have been able to clearly make out the outline of the creature to whom the fin belonged; a young anthropomorphic common dolphin.
